In Europe, public concern about environmental issues had a significant influence on the manufacturing processes of companies operating on the field of deter- gents and in particular in laundry detergents. Consequently, focus was not only on the development of more innovative, effective and refined products, but also on ways to reduce the impacts of the product on the environment. Concentrated detergents have the least environmental impacts but have not been very successful on the market. In some markets for example, sales dropped dramatically as consumers considered concen- trates poor value for money. This perception was often bolstered by consumers exceeding the recommended dosages when using concentrated products.
In addition, the increasing presence of private labels in the detergent sector is a factor intensifying competition between manufacturers and retailers, as well as between retailers themselves.
